Making a neutral colour scheme interesting and effective

Working with neutral colours is perhaps the most popular choice when decorating a home but this does not mean it has to be dull or conventional.

The basic principal to follow is to layer your colours by adding texture. For example a plain wall can have silk curtains in the same colour with sofas in a crushed velvet again in the same colour with cushions that have a 3D effect and a hint of colour or a strong pattern.

Create light and shade by placing objects to catch natural light. Reflective lamp bases and hurricane lanterns are perfect for this as are mirrors and candle holders.

Clever lighting can also have an impact. Make use of plenty of lamps of different sizes and heights to create light from different directions. Lamp shades can also be neutral but come in a wide variety of finishes from silk, to taffeta to linen. Remember compare colour contrast texture.

To liven up your neutral colour scheme consider adding pops of colour. Accessories do this quickly, cheaply and easily be changed around to reflect the seasons (yellows and lime greens for spring/summer; deep reds and purples for autumn/winter). In kitchens neutral walls and units work well but consider adding a lively colour on one feature such as the bar stools in the picture below to add interest.

Bedrooms are particularly well suited to neutral colour schemes as they promote calm and tranquility. Texture here again is key, contrast cotton sheets with silk cushions a fabric or leather oversized headboard and a fur throw.

Often a room needs a focal point and in a neutral room a great way to do this is to add a single object that draws the eye. It could be a single cowhide armchair or a large abtract painting or even a book case with the colours of the books themselves adding interest and creating a feature that is not too overpowering.
